If you want to succeed, you will need to enroll in a post-secondary education program. You can find programs at local colleges, universities, or national and regional floral design organizations. Certificate programs typically take one year to complete, while degree programs can be completed in two years.

An internship is another possibility. To land one, you’ll need to network with industry peers, both in person and online. You can also attend local gardening workshops or events to meet professional horticulturists. Tell them about your interest in working as a floral designer.

Becoming a Certified Floral Designer (CFD) will show others that you are serious about your career. This national certification is voluntary and can be used as a marketing tool for your freelance floral design business or as a means to earn a higher salary.

Pennsylvania Schools for Floral Designers

You can develop your skills and experience as a floral designer by attending one-day classes and workshops, or by attending courses that last several weeks:

Bucks County Community College has collaborated with the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD) to create a floral design certificate program. The program can be completed in less than six months. Students receive the CFD credential upon completion of all program requirements. Tuition is approximately $3000 for the entire program.
Delaware County Community College is located in the city of Media. The school offers introductory and advanced courses in floral design. All classes can be completed in two to three months. The introductory and advanced courses cost $179 each, while the festive floral workshop costs $75.
Pennsylvania Floral Academy offers several workshops lasting about 45 minutes each. Students learn basic and advanced techniques as well as historical concepts related to floral design. Classes are offered on a presentation basis, with a flat fee of $200.

National Certification for Floral Designers in Pennsylvania

When you begin your job search, you may find that most employers prefer floral designers who have at least six months of professional experience. However, you can bypass this requirement when you become nationally certified as a CFD.

The CFD credential can be obtained exclusively through the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD). The organization requires that:

Complete a floral design education program at an AIFD partner education center, an endorsed state floral association, or a SAIFD chapter (AIFD Student Chapter) and score 80 percent or higher on the online Professional Floral Design Assessment (PFDE) test.
Complete the PFDE online test with a score of 80 percent or higher and participate in the hands-on design assessment.
