Requirements to become a floral designer in Wyoming

Since there are no national or state standards governing floral design, you’ll be able to find an entry-level job with a high school diploma or GED, or even without either. However, if you want to show that you’re serious about this career, you should add some post-secondary training to your resume.

You may choose to attend a local college or university to earn a certificate or degree in floral design or horticulture, which will typically require one to two years to complete. Additionally, certificate programs can be found through local, regional, or national floral design associations.

Internships can be taken alongside, or instead of, a floral design training program. These internships will give you hands-on experience. You can network with industry peers online or in person at local gardening events, workshops, or community organizations to find apprenticeship or mentoring opportunities.

A great way to stand out from the competition is to obtain national certification as a floral designer. This will show potential clients that you are a qualified professional and you will be able to demand a higher salary if you are employed.

Wyoming Schools for Floral Designers

You can find local workshops or complete courses to train as a professional florist. For example:

  • Floral Design Institute offers three floral design courses, all online. The cost of the basic course is $1750 and takes about five weeks to complete. The advanced course costs $650 and can be followed at your own pace. The Wedding Floral Specialist course, which is the latest course offering, costs $1440 and can be completed in six to nine months.
  • Penn Foster Career School offers a certificate program that can be completed entirely online. Currently, tuition costs around $640 and certification can be earned in just five months.

National Certification for Floral Designers in Wyoming

To become a Certified Floral Designer (CFD), you will need to meet the requirements set forth by the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD). Most employers do not require candidates to have this nationally recognized credential; however, if you decide to become a CFD, employers may be willing to hire you with little or no professional experience in the trade.

To obtain the CFD credential, the AIFD asks for one of the following requirements:

  • Complete a floral design education program at an AIFD partner education center, approved state floral association, or SAIFD chapter (AIFD Student Chapter) and score 80 percent or higher on the online Professional Floral Design Assessment (PFDE) test.
  • Complete the PFDE online test with a score of 80 percent or higher and participate in the hands-on design assessment.

CFDs will receive a certificate, pin and listing in AIFD’s online and print directories.

To obtain this certification in Wyoming, you will need to pass the PFDE online test as well as the practical design assessment, as this state does not currently offer AIFD-approved training programs. You will need to pay a registration fee of $150 as well as an exam fee, which is $1550.

You will also have to pay $124 by May 1 of each year to maintain your CFD. Additionally, you will need to complete at least 25 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) every three years. The AIFD provides an online list of the multitude of ways you can earn your CEUs.

Career prospects and salary expectations

In 2016, The Projections Managing Partnership (PMP) reported that there were 200 florists employed in Wyoming. The PMP projects that there will be a total of 180 floral designers working in the state by 2026, indicating a 10.4 percent decline in the labor market over this 10-year period.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported in 2017 that floral designers in Wyoming earned an average of $13.05 per hour, or $27,150 per year. The top 10 percent of florists working in this state earned $39,030 during the same year.

The BLS expects there to be a six percent national decline in the job market for floral designers by 2026. Still, there is an opening for you if you want to become a floral designer.
